“American’s Largest Open House” is at it again: Virginia’s Historic Garden Week, the state’s oldest volunteer tourism project and the country’s sole home and garden tour, is returning to Hampton Roads.

Every spring, visitors are invited to tour over 250 of Virginia’s most exquisite homes, gardens and historic landmarks during the statewide event at the peak of VA’s springtime color. Private residents open their doors across the Commonwealth, welcoming thousands of visitors into their living spaces and beyond their garden gates to enjoy floral design and discuss landscape maintenance.

While the participating homeowners are responsible for the presentation of exterior gardens, their home showrooms are staged by flower arrangements (over 2,300 in total) created by Garden Club of Virginia members. More than 40 of Virginia’s historic public gardens and landscapes are funded by proceeds from the tour. Last year alone, the local, one-day tour through seaside homes at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront raised over $60,000proceeds returned to the state to support state parks, restore public gardens, and award fellowships to students with a passion for conservation and landscape architecture.

Coastal Virginia will feature five of the 29 tours taking place over the 8-day showcase, so residents and tourists of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Suffolk, Williamsburg, and Hampton-Newport News are encouraged to explore the many homes and gardens on exhibit.
